It’s true! Don’t let the cool autumn or dark winter months discourage you from getting out on the water because paddleboarding is an all round year activity, we even printed it on a t-shirt so it must be true! All you need are the right conditions.
In Ireland, our dull winter days are usually comprised of wind and rain also know as ‘storms’, but there are good days that make SUPing a great excuse to get out of the house and enjoy paddleboarding all year round.
There are a few things to bear in mind, so we’ve compiled a short checklist to help you out.
1. Check the Weather Forecast
It might seem obvious, but check on the weather. It’s good to know in advance how the day might change when you are out paddling.
2. Go Early
Go out early if you can to take advantage of as much daylight as possible. Stay close to shore so you can get back quickly when darkness falls.
3. Tell a Friend
If you are paddling solo, be sure to tell a friend where you are going and when you expect to be back. If something were to happen, they will call for help and know exactly where to look.
4. Wrap Up
Wear top and bottom thermals, hat & gloves, thick socks and warm boots (keep your feet warm). Just like hiking, the secret is layers, if you get too warm you can take off a layer. If you get too cold you can add another layer. If you paddle on calm waters regularly and plan on staying dry, consider investing in a drysuit. If you intend spending time in the water, a thick wetsuit might be a good option.
5. Use a SUP Leash
You should always use a SUP leash to connect you to your board, after all the SUP board is a large flotation device so be sure to hook on to it!
6. Avoid Ice & Frozen Areas
Ice is dangerous. Don’t walk on ice and always steer clear of any frozen sections when paddling.
7. Pack a Warm Kit
Pack an extra warm change of clothes and a towel for when you finish SUPing. A flask of hot tea/coffee/soup would be something to look forward to when you get back from your SUP session.
